The best chat apps do more than send messages. They keep your conversations between you and the people you chose to talk to. This guide gives you seven features to check, and shows how Lovele covers each one. If you want the basics first, start with our guide to the encrypted messaging app.
You do not need a technical background. Each feature comes with a plain reason it matters and a simple way to check it before you install anything.
What makes the best chat apps private?
A private chat app encrypts every message on your device, cannot read it on its servers, and keeps your contacts and posts to yourself. Encryption, limited access and clear control matter more than a long list of extras.
Many apps look alike on the surface. They all show bubbles, photos and emoji. The difference is what happens to a message after you press send.
In a private app, the message is locked on your phone and unlocked only on your friend's phone. The company in the middle just passes along a sealed package. That is what end-to-end encryption means.
Privacy also covers the smaller things: who can see your friends, whether your phone number is shown, and how long photos stay around. A good app handles all of these, not only the lock on the message.
Which seven features matter most?
Look for end-to-end encryption on every chat, encrypted groups and calls, keys that stay on your device, short-lived media, simple sign-in, a private feed and a clear way the app pays its bills.
- End-to-end encryption on every message, not only some chats
- Groups and calls protected the same way as one-to-one chats
- Keys that are made on your device and never leave it
- Photos, videos and voice messages that do not stay forever
- Sign-in that does not force you to share a phone number
- A feed that only your friends can see
- A clear answer to how the app is paid for
How does Lovele cover each feature?
Lovele is a private chat app with end-to-end encrypted messages, groups and calls, and a feed only your friends see. The table shows how Lovele handles each of the seven features.
| Feature | Why it matters | How Lovele does it |
|---|---|---|
| End-to-end encryption | Only your chat can read the message | Every message is encrypted before it leaves your device, and only your friend's device can decrypt it |
| Groups and calls | Group chats and calls are often the weak spot | Every group message is encrypted like a one-to-one chat, and audio and video calls are end-to-end encrypted |
| Device keys | Keys held by a company can be misused | Every phone and browser makes its own keys, and they never leave it |
| Short-lived media | Old photos can resurface | Photos, videos and voice messages are deleted 24 hours after you send them, or sooner if you choose |
| Simple sign-in | Fewer details shared means less to leak | Sign in with email, Google, Apple or your phone, with no password to remember |
| Private feed | Posts should reach friends only | Your posts reach your mutual friends and nobody else |
| Clear funding | You should know how the app earns | Advertising pays for Lovele |

Is end-to-end encryption enough on its own?
It is the most important feature, but the details matter. Look for an open standard, keys that keep changing, and a design the company publishes so anyone can read it.
Lovele uses MLS (RFC 9420), the open standard for encrypted messaging, for every chat, one to one and in groups. It adds post-quantum hybrid keys, which are built to stay safe even against future, more powerful computers.
Keys keep changing as you talk. A stolen key cannot open earlier messages, or later ones after the next update. Messages, photos and voice notes are encrypted on your device and decrypted only on the devices of the people in the chat.
Servers matter too. Lovele's servers deliver encrypted messages they cannot open and delete them after delivery, so nobody at Lovele can read your messages. The full encryption design is published at lovele.app/security.
Do groups and calls get the same protection?
In Lovele, yes. Group messages are encrypted like a one-to-one chat, and audio and video calls, one to one or in a group, are end-to-end encrypted like your messages.
Groups work from a few close friends to large groups. You do not have to pick between size and privacy. If groups are your main use, our guide to the best group chat app lists what else to look for.
Voice notes follow the same rule. You can record, send, and listen back at 1.5x or 2x, and they are encrypted like everything else.
What should a private app do with your details and posts?
It should ask for as little as possible and show your information to as few people as possible. Lovele does not require a phone number, and your posts and friend list stay among your friends.
With Lovele, a phone number is optional. You sign in with a code sent to your email or by SMS, or with your Google or Apple account. Your email and number are never shown on your profile.
You can add people by their phone number, or bring someone in with your own invite link. Nobody else sees who your friends are.
The feed works the same way. You can share photos, videos and links with a preview, and your posts reach your mutual friends and nobody else.
How is a private chat app paid for?
Advertising pays for Lovele. Lovele also has a rewards program: points are a loyalty program, not money, and you can join it if you want.
Knowing who pays for an app tells you what it is built around. For Lovele, the answer is advertising, and it is stated openly.
If you join the rewards program, there are ways to earn points every day. Open the app once a day to grow your streak. Miss a day and it steps back one day, not to zero.
Points have no value until you redeem them, they are not transferable between users, and they do not expire. Anti-fraud checks cover points and redemptions, with a person reviewing anything unusual.
How do you choose between chat apps?
Start with the people you talk to, then check the seven features above. Pick the app where your friends can actually join and where the privacy claims are clear and published.
- List the people you talk to most, and check which devices they use.
- Check that every chat, including groups and calls, is end-to-end encrypted.
- Find out where keys are made and whether the design is published.
- Look at what the app asks for at sign-up.
- Read how the app is paid for.
- Try it with two or three friends for a week before you move everyone.
